汉语经常使用流水句，甚至一逗到底。译为英文时，必须在适当的地方断开，给读者喘息的机会。比如：

译文：

Only innovation will create new manufacturing and processing technologies, extend the industry chain, and add new, greener products with better properties, more specialization and higher value-added. Such an optimized product mix will increase our competitive edge and capacity to support other industries in the national economy.

分析：原文是结构紧密的一句话，但若译为一句英文，就显得过长。译文在.“只有”和“才能”之间断开，并以“such an optimized product mix”总结上句，以便与下句顺利衔接。

原文：

目前，石化产业在快速发展中长期积累的矛盾日益凸现。经济发展方式比较粗放，结构性矛盾比较突出，行业经济规模大而不强，资源环境约束加大；去年下半年以来，受国际金融危机影响，石化产业受到严重冲击。

译文：

At this point, a number of problems have surfaced as a result of many years of fast expansion. These include overly extensive growth, structural imbalances, lack of competitiveness in spite of large scale, and increasing constraints in natural resources and the environment. Since the second half of last year, the Chinese petrochemical industry has been hit hard by the international financial crisis.

分析：这里的“；”可以理解为句号，也都是说明情况的。这种情况下，分为两个句子处理，更好理解。
