汉语中用范畴词概括具体词，并不限于名词；对一个动词短语，也可以进行类似的概括。如果这一概括没有实质意义，一般不用翻译出来，只需翻译该动词短语，如：

例1：

坚持效率优先、兼顾公平的原则。

The first priority should be efficiency, with due consideration given to equity.

分析：这里的原则并没有实际意义，重点在于“效率优先、兼顾公平”，因此可以不翻译出来

例2：

我们必须坚持解决群众当前困难与长期发展相结合的原则。

原译：We should adopt the principle of combining solutions to people's immediate difficulties with long term development.

改译1：We should combine solving people's immediate problems with promoting long term development.

改译2：We should try to solve people's immediate problems and at the same time to promote long term development.

如果坚持的是真正的“原则”，则要把“原则”翻译出来，如：

例1：

而坚持社会主义,实行按劳分配的原则，就不会产生贫富过大的差距。

But if we adhere to socialism and apply the principle of distribution to each according to his work, there will not be excessive disparities in wealth.

例2：

根据自力更生的原则，所有部队单位均应
