如果被修饰语本身已经足以表达作者的意思，就不必翻译修饰语。如“伟大的历史意义”,不用翻译为great, historic, significance，因为英语中historic的意思本身已经十分强烈。“历史经验已经雄辩地证明”不用说“historical experience has convincingly proved that..."因为必须“雄辩”才能“prove”。再如：

例1：部长说，这种行为严重损害了医疗行业的声誉，必须予以坚决取缔。

A: “All this conduct has severely damaged the reputation of the medical profession and must be firmly banned,“ the minister said.

B: “All this conduct has severely damaged the reputation of the medical profession and must be banned,” the minister said.

分析：英语中ban已经是一种坚决的行为。

例2：在整个改革开放过程中，我们要始终坚持反对腐败。

A: During the entire process of reform and opening, we must persistently oppose corruption.

B: Throughout the process of reform and opening, we must combat corruption.

经常需要省略的加强词

汉语中有些加强词出现十分频繁，应引起我们足够注意，如：

例1：采取积极措施，发展小型采掘业。

A: Active efforts should be made to develop small-scale mining.

B: Efforts should be made to develop small-scale mining.

分析：既然是努力，必定是积极的，不可能消极努力。

如果确实需要强调,可以用别的方法,如:”we should vigorously promote,” ”make every effort to promote," "use all means to promote," "do every-thing possible to promote”等等。

例2：有效治理黄河，造福人民群众

A: to benefit the people by means of an effective control of the Yellow River

B: to benefit the people by controlling the Yellow River

分析：Control本身就意味着有效。

例3：为了圆满完成本届代表大会确定的艰巨复杂的任务

A: to successfully accomplish the arduous and complicated tasks defined at this congress

B: to accomplish the arduous, complica1ed tasks defined at this congress

分析：To successfully accomplish = to succeed in accomplishing = to accomplish
