Parallel structure

Definition

Parallel structure – that is, the expression of matching ideas in matching form – is one of the most basic and valuable stylistic devices in English. [

Example

Where there’s a will there’s a way.

To be, or not to be: that is the question.

To have and hold from this day forward, for better for worse, for richer for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death us do part.

government of the people, by the people, and for the people民有、民治、民享的政府

In most cases, it will suffice to concentrate on those areas in which parallelism is virtually mandatory and on those potential missteps that have proved most hazardous to Chinese.

The constructions we shall consider are those in which:

1. Sentence elements are linked by one of the coordinating conjunctions (“and”, “or”, etc.)[

2. Elements are linked by one of the so-called correlative conjunctions (“both … and,” “not only … but also,” etc.) [

3. Items appear in the form of a list or a series of headings (e.g., subtitles in a report)[

4. Elements are linked in comparisons.[
