辨析：

原译之所以错，在于译者没有弄清announce一词的确切含义，进而把句中的he和 Lord Williams看成了一个人。announce的意思有两个：make a public or official statement(宣告，通告)和tell people something clearly or loudly(大声通报)，电台和电视台的播音员就叫announcer. announce一般用作及物动词，其后可接名词，如：

announce dinner

宣布(饭准备好了，可以)开饭

The company announced a 25% increase of profit. 

公司宣告利润增长了25%。

The government announced a tax increase.

政府通告要增税。

There was a press release announcing the senator's resignation.

发布了该参议员辞职的消息。

其后也可接从句，如l am pleased to announce that they will get married in three months.我很高兴地宣布，他们将于三个月后结婚。announce a visitor中的announce应属于上述的第二个意思。Macmillan English Dictionary(这是2002年出的一本词典，值得向大家推荐)的解释是to say formally someone has arrived。《英华大词典》提供的译文是“通报有客”，其实还不够清楚，确切说应该是“(大声)通报某客人到”，所以原句应译做:他(大声)通报威廉斯勋爵到。“他”应该是内部的仆人，通报的目的是通知主人出来迎接客人。

类似用法又比如:May l announce you please? 可译为：我可以去通报说您到了吗？
