前面我们讲到了“吃透含义”、“避免意思重复”、“尽量简洁”和“可以化解”这四种办法，接下来我们一起了解下最后一种办法。

五是具有概括性。译文要能够顾名思义，或者经得起解释。请看这样一段英文：

Launch of the “100,000 Strong: U. S. Students in China” Initiative: Secretary Clinton launched the “100,000 Strong” Initiative, which was announced by President Barack Obama during his November 2009 visit to China. The Initiative promotes mutual understanding through encouraging private-sector student exchanges and aspires to have 100, 000 American students study in China over the next four years.

其中的100,000 Strong，笔者看到有报纸上翻译为“十万强”。这种译法就无法顾名思义，也经不起解释：“强”如何与数量之大联系起来？如果译为“十万之众”，则听起来有意义，也可以和“人多”联系起来。汉译英时，经常看到词不达意的情况，比如，把“科学发展观”翻译为scientific outlook on development就无法理解，因为outlook是指“前景”（economic outlook）或个人的主观看法（Marxist outlook on religion），无法与scientific搭配。“科学发展观”是指在做出发展决策的时候，要充分论证，不拍脑门；所以较好的译法是the concept of evidence-based development, the concept of science-based development，或a scientific approach to development。也不能翻译为scientific development，那是指“科技的发展”。

原文：

积极实施和完善“一省两地”产业发展战略（“一省”是指新兴工业省，“两地”是指热带高效农业基地、热带滨海旅游度假胜地）

译文：

Our strategy is to develop Hainan into an industrialized province, a strong centre of tropical agriculture, and a beach vacation destination (“One Province, Two Pillars”).

这里的“一省两地”显然是比照“一国两制”提出来的，但中文的“两地”用英文如何概括才能包含“基地”和“圣地”的意思？two places显然不行。经过分析，发现热带农业和旅游业都是支柱产业，所以概括为One Province，Two Pillars。

另外，也不必说a NEW industrialised province，因为develop into当中已经隐含；Strong隐含了“高效”；也不必说TROPICAL beach，因为读者从“热带农业中”已知这里是热带，而且beach给人的感觉就是温暖的地方。
