【求疵笔记】任何一位英语初学者都可以看出本译文的文理不通。它的意思也不对，纯属中国式思维。大学学报对学术繁荣起了一定的作用，但不是全部。读罢这样的译文反而使人觉得大学学报对学术繁荣起的作用非常有限。孔子和苏格拉底的时代根本没有这些，却是人类历史上学术最繁荣的时期。国家资源的配置应向何方倾斜？这个千疮百孔的译文不知在说些什么，句中与其用impossible，毋宁用possible，或许更接近事实。

名义上  这项工作名义上我们大家负责，实际上没有人负责。

【查阅辞典】名义上 nominally负责 be responsible for，be in charge of 实际上in fact，in reality，actually

【求疵笔记】“名义上……实际上……”应该用officially. . .actually（或in fact ）...译出。The Penguin English Student 's Dictionary（《企鹅英语学生词典》）例句:Officially she's unable to go because she has a headache but in fact she doesn't want to go at all.（名义上她头痛不能去，实际上她根本就不想去。）句中officially可理解为“找一个冠冕堂皇的理由说说而已”。

【修改建议】Officially all of us are in charge, but actually nobody is responsible for this work.

那么  没有你们的帮助，我们的实验是不会那么成功的。

【查阅辞典】实验experiment成功succeed; success; successful

【求疵笔记】原文的意思是:“我们的实验十分成功。如果没有你们的帮助,我们只能取得九分、八分，甚至更少的成功。”而译文的意思是：“没有你们的帮助，我们就不会成功，换言之，就会流于失败。”翻译“不……那么（那样、如此）”不能用否定式，而要用肯定式＋ less表示。Longman Modern English Dictionary （《朗文现代英语词典》》例句:My head aches less now.（我的头现在不那么疼痛了。）

【修改建议】But for your help we could have succeeded less in the experiment.

年号  清代嘉庆、道光时期不少章回小说都难以用传统小说类型来框定。

【求疵笔记】汉英翻译应该将古代皇帝的年号换算成现代的公元纪年。这需要查阅一下大型辞书后面附录的中国历史纪年表。比如本句“嘉道时期”应该译作1796~1850，亦即18世纪末至19世纪上半叶the end of 18th century and the first half of 19th century。西方读者读了就会非常形象地在脑海中浮现从英国湖畔派诗人的创作活动起，到英国作家狄更斯和美国作家霍桑分别发表《远大前程》和《红字》止，这一段历史时期。如果不这么翻译，恐怕大多数外国人心中没谱。2003年在杭州某风景区见一块导游牌，上面用中英文写着“六和塔始建于北宋开宝三年”云云，其中“开宝三年”译作Kaibao third year。如果费心查一下，便可译作970 A.D.。有的书上将“庚辰年”译作the year of Gengchen，就等于没有翻译。说起来读者自己也可以去查阅，但是仅凭the year of Gengchen，人们通过何种途径才能查到“庚辰年”，进而查到具体的年代呢？还不如译者辛苦一点，把方便留给读者。
