按照字面意思，marriage“婚”，contract“约”，两者组合难道不是“婚约”？

其实，contract of marriage是“结婚”，并非“婚约”。

我国《婚约法》权威英译本将marriage contract（即，contract of marriage）、contract a marriage和marriage shall be contracted 都译为“结婚”。

Article 7 Both the man and the woman desiring to contract a marriage shall …

“contract of marriage”或“marriage contract”是结婚本身，不能与“婚约”（或“订婚”）混为一谈。“contract to marry”指的是同意将来结婚，并非结婚本身，这种情况则是指的婚约，而不是结婚。
