Logical connectives

Logical connectives show the reader how two adjacent ideas are related, smoothing the transition from one to the next. In other words, they indicate the direction the writer’s thought is about to take, making it easy for the reader to follow. [逻辑联结词作为两个句子的过渡,方便读者理解]

More often, when relations between ideas have only to be suggested in Chinese, they must be plainly stated in English. [中文仅仅是暗示两个观点之间的联系,但英文需要明确说出这种联系,这种情况就需要使用逻辑联结词]

Examples of logical connectives: also, in addition, but, on the contrary, because, as a consequence, meanwhile, at that time.

The conjunctions that link clauses grammatically are also the primary means of linking them logically. [让子句产生语法联系的连接词同样是让子句产生逻辑联系的主要方法]

Example:

Forty-two thousand refugees will be short of food in the coming months, and 3,000 houses need to be restored.[语法联系:并列连词连接两个独立子句。逻辑关系:第二个子句给出第一个子句的更多信息]

Since most of Hunan’s coal mines are located in remote, hilly land, the province has encouraged laid-off workers there to switch to agriculture to earn a living. [语法联系:从属连词连接从句和独立子句。逻辑关系:独立子句是从句的结果]

Although two sentences are by definition separate structures that are not connected grammatically, they still need to be connected logically. Sometimes the logical relation is self-evident, but often a word is needed to make it explicit. In that case, a coordinating conjunction may serve the purpose. [尽管两个句子是无需语法连接的独立结构,但依旧需要逻辑连接。有时,逻辑关系十分明显,但大多数情况下,都需要使用词语连接,表明逻辑关系]

More often, however, the logical link between two sentences is provided not by a conjunction but by an adverb. The function of adverbs, as you know, is simply to modify a verb, an adjective, anther adverb, or sometimes a sentence as a whole. Unlike conjunctions, such adverbs as “therefore”, “however”, “consequently”, “nevertheless”, “besides” and so on contribute nothing to the grammatical structure of a sentence. But like conjunctions, they contribute a great deal to its meaning. They show how the thought or action expressed in a given sentence is related to the thought or action in the preceding one. [大多数情况下,使用副词让两个句子产生逻辑关系]
