Quit

Definition: Leave (a place), usually permanently. (Oxford Dictionary)

If you quit, or quit your job, you choose to leave it.

Example: The villagers told them to quit the place immediately.

The High Court ordered that they must quite the site.

He fears that other quality stores will quit the city if it continues to allow more discount stores to trade.

Resign

Definition: Voluntarily leave a job or office.

If you resign from a job or position, you formally announce that you are leaving it.

Example: He resigned from the government in protest at the policy.

The Chancellor resigned from office and decided to leave the academy on his own.

Following the expulsions, two more union leaders resigned from the party.

Step down/step aside

Definition: Withdraw or resign from an important position or office

If someone steps down or steps aside, they resign from an important job or position, often in order to let someone else take their place.

Example: He has decided to step down as captain of the team.

Last night he decided to step down from his position rather than follow his party’s line.

James has since said he would be stepping down later this year from his position.
