Verdict

Definition: A decision on an issue of fact in a civil or criminal case or an inquest [Oxford Dictionary]

It is often an opinion or judgement on guilty or not guilty.

Example: The jury returned a verdict of not guilty.

Coroner Dr Roy Palmer recorded an accidental death verdict at the inquest on March 17.

Sentence

Definition: The punishment assigned to a defendant found guilty by a court, or fixed by law for a particular offence. [Oxford Dictionary]

It is often refer to specific punishment made by a judge or court staff after a guilty verdict, such as imprisonment or fine.

Example: Her husband is serving a three-year sentence for fraud.

He was under sentence of death.


He was found guilty of nine counts of his indictment and sentenced to life imprisonment.


Judgment

Definition: The ability to make considered decisions or come to sensible conclusions – 1.1 an opinion or conclusion; 1.2 a decision of a law court or judge. [Oxford Dictionary]

A judgment constitutes the final decision of the court and includes the verdict and the sentence imposed

Example: When reviewing cases, councils will also need to take into account any fresh case law judgments from the Appeal Court that may be relevant.

Rather than go to court, civil defendants may accept default judgments.
