六个“居住”的区别

“Live” 这个词对大家来说应该不陌生，我们通常用它表示 “居住” 在哪里。比如：I live in London. 我住在伦敦。在日常对话中使用较多，在这几个词中，live涵盖范围最广。

如果要描述一个人的居住地，那么最常用动词就是 “live”，它所表达的意思是 “在一个国家、地区、城市或环境内生活、居住”。当然，在表示具体的居住地点时，应该使用搭配 “live in” 或 “live at”。比如：我住在学校里。I live on campus.

“dwell”，它是一个正式用语，意思是 “住在一个具体的地点，或以一种特殊的方式生活”（牛津释义：Live in or at a specified place.）。

Some people choose to dwell in remote villages. 有些人选择居住在偏远的村庄。

我们在 “dwell” 的后面加 “i-n-g”，它就变成了 “dwelling 房屋、住所”；在 “dwell” 后面加 “e-r”，就变成了 “dweller 住在…地方的人”。比如：住在城市里的人 city dwellers；住在乡村里的人 country-dwellers。

“Inhabit” 多用在谈论生态环境、地理、自然等语境中，来表示 “动物在某处栖息”（牛津释义：live in or occupy (a place or environment)）。

inhabit 指人或动物因习性或习惯居住在一起。inhabit多见用作及物动词，也可用作不及物动词。

Our country is a multi-national country, the western part of which is inhabited by many minorities.

我国是一个多民族国家，许多少数民族聚居于西部地区。

"settle"定居，指在某个国家、城市、地区长期“定居”。也可说 settle down, 表示“定居”、“安定”、“安顿”的意思。（牛津释义：Make one's permanent home somewhere; move with a group of others to live in a new country or area.）

After years of travel, we decided to settle in London.

多年漂泊之后，我们决定在伦敦住下来。

"reside"指固定居住在某一地方，尤指合法的永久性居住。其名词是 residence。（牛津释义：Have one's permanent home in a particular place.）

He has submitted the application for permanent residence in Canada.

他已经递交了定居加拿大的申请。

"lodge"暂住、借宿、投宿，指短时间或临时住宿。（牛津释义：Rent accommodation in another person's house; provide (someone) with accommodation in return for payment.）

We lodged in a small hotel on our trip.

旅途中我们住在一家小旅馆里。
